I’m Moving—What Do I Do Now?

Whether you’re upgrading, downsizing, or simply starting a new chapter, there are several things to take care of before moving day. A little preparation can make the entire process feel much less overwhelming.

1. Make a Moving Checklist

Moving involves much more than transporting your belongings from one place to another. Life doesn’t pause just because you’re moving. Work, school, appointments, meals, and everyday responsibilities still need your attention.

Creating a checklist can help you stay organized and reduce some of the stress that comes with moving.

Schedule Your Utilities

Arrange to have utilities connected or transferred before you arrive at your new home. You don’t want to spend your first night sitting in the dark—or without air conditioning during a West Texas summer.

Don’t forget to schedule internet service, too. After a long day of moving, you may want nothing more than to relax and watch your favorite show.

Update Your Address

Complete a change-of-address form with the post office. You may also need to update your address with:

  • Banks and credit card companies

  • Insurance providers

  • Your employer

  • Your children’s schools

  • Doctors and pharmacies

  • Subscription services

This helps prevent important or sensitive mail from being delivered to your former address.

2. Declutter Before You Pack

The best time to “spring clean” may actually be before a move—regardless of the season.

Use your move as an opportunity to sort through your belongings and eliminate items you no longer need, use, or want. The less you keep, the less you’ll need to pack, move, and unpack.

Consider donating, selling, recycling, or throwing away unwanted items.

3. Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute to Pack

Packing takes more time than most people expect.

Try packing one or two boxes each day. Begin with items you don’t use regularly, such as:

  • Extra dishes

  • Seasonal clothing

  • Books

  • Decorations

  • Collectibles and knickknacks

Save everyday essentials for last. Packing gradually will make the project feel much more manageable.

4. Pack an Essentials Suitcase

Pack a suitcase or overnight bag for each family member with enough clothing and necessities for at least a couple of days.

Include:

  • Medications

  • Toiletries

  • Phone chargers

  • Pajamas

  • A change of clothes

  • Important personal items

  • Toilet paper and paper towels

After a long moving day, you may be too tired to unpack everything immediately. Keeping your essentials nearby means you won’t have to search through boxes for the things you need most.

5. Schedule Help Early

Whether friends and family will be helping or you plan to hire a professional moving company, don’t wait until the last minute to finalize your plans.

Moving companies can book quickly, especially during weekends, summer months, and the end or beginning of the month. Scheduling early gives you a better chance of securing the moving date you want.

6. Keep Important Documents With You

Important documents should be placed together and kept in a secure, easily accessible location.

Examples include:

  • Birth certificates

  • Social Security cards

  • Vehicle titles

  • Insurance documents

  • Bank statements

  • Closing documents

  • Passports

  • Medical records

Do not pack these documents where they could accidentally be loaded onto the moving truck. Keep them with you during the move.

A Little Planning Goes a Long Way
